The MFS Upper School Varsity Baseball Team is entering the 2025-2026 spring sport season with not only new players, but also new uniforms, making the baseball team the first sport to receive new uniforms in three years. After a long planning phase with the Athletic Department, the team voted on the final uniform design during their interest meeting on January 16.
This uniform change may mark the beginning of many more sports-related uniform and equipment updates over the coming years.Bryan Wright, Assistant Head of the Athletic Department, said he hopes that in the next few years the department will be able to reestablish a system that regularly updates uniforms across all MFS sports.
Wright explained that getting new uniforms is a priority for the Athletic Department.
“This is paramount, getting the uniforms back in rotation … Hopefully we can look at all the different uniforms and see what sports team is next,” said Wright.
Wright mentioned that the last uniform change for any of the sports was just before he started working at MFS. The Athletic Department has meetings about possible changes and updates that need to be made, as there has been a rising awareness that new uniforms need to come into rotation. At the beginning of the 2025-26 school year, the Athletic Department met to discuss possible uniform updates.
Wright clarified that some sports teams need uniforms more urgently than others.
“We also have taken into consideration how uniforms are used. Baseball is a uniform [that] needs to be durable because they’re sliding, and there’s red clay and all that stuff.”
Head of the Athletic Department, Isaiah Coleman, agreed with the decision to upgrade the baseball team’s uniforms.
“Baseball seemed to be the varsity team that looked not the cleanest out [on the fields]. From a quality standpoint, we just didn’t look [good]. We could have better represented ourselves, so that’s why baseball was chosen,” said Coleman.
The Athletic Department took into consideration costs, quantity, and quality of uniforms, according to Wright. They also wanted to ensure they were going to get substantial use from the uniforms over the next few years.
“I was approached by Mr. Coleman and Mr. Wright … they shared that we were beginning new uniforms,” said Justin Spencer-Linzie, Head Coach of the Baseball team.
Spencer-Linzie voiced his opinion on the previous uniform by saying, “I think we were maybe a little behind the eight ball with the last design.”
He said he was glad the Athletic Department had picked the baseball team and was satisfied with the amount of input they allowed him when it came to the design process.
When it came to the actual design phase, Spencer-Linzie and the rest of the coaching staff worked together to come up with design elements that they wanted in the uniforms. They looked at what was trendy in high school uniforms, as well as looking at college designs, too, according to Spencer-Linzie. Ultimately, they came up with a few designs they showed to the team and had them vote on which one they liked best.
Justin Lewis ’26 explained that during the design process of the uniforms, there was a focus to include underclassmen’s voices, as “they’re the future, and they’re going to be wearing them for the next three or four years.”
Coleman shared that the upgrade in the uniforms showed the team that the Athletic Department cares about them, noting the “time that the school is investing in their program.”
Spencer-Linzie went on to discuss how he and the coaching staff are always striving for new elements to improve their team. He believes these uniforms could be a major element that will help this team’s mindset in the coming season.
Alongside the technical aspects of creating and planning for new uniforms, there has also been a mentality shift and excitement brewing on the team, according to the coaches and players from the team.
Spencer-Linzie explained how the new uniforms could potentially improve team morale.
“I think for me personally, it’s a mindset like, you know, look good, feel good, right?” he said.
Lewis also explained how the new uniforms are a factor in the excitement for the upcoming season.
“I feel like everyone was excited. It definitely got me pumped up for the season because I didn’t expect [the new uniforms],” said Lewis.
Lewis continued, “I think [having new uniforms] is a great way to add some spark into the team and have some more pride for your team.”
