When I went to see Oz the Great and Powerful, I had no idea what to expect. I had heard this new movie, which is almost a prequel to the movie, The Wizard of Oz, was boring and too sentimental. I had also heard that the movie was too scary for smaller children, even though it was based off a child’s book.
I really liked the movie. The colors were very vivid, and the special effects made it especially interesting. The movie was sentimental and a bit corny, but I think that is how children’s movies should be. Oz was fast paced and charming. The little china doll and flying monkey added comic relief to the plot.
The one major issue I had with the movie was the main character, Oz, played by James Franco. I thought his character was over the top. He was way too sleazy in the beginning of the movie, and he goes on to be almost always perfect. In just a few minutes, Oz goes from never helping anyone to helping everyone. I think his character transformation was too extreme and happened too suddenly.
Overall, I really enjoyed this film. It was playful, charming, and exciting. Definitely go see this movie, especially if you are feeling nostalgia for the childhood classic, The Wizard of Oz.
