Tips for writing letters to the editor:
- Read examples of Letters to the Editor in the publication you’re writing to
- Here are the New York Times’ Letters to the Editor
- State your position immediately
- It’s a good idea to respond to a specific news article from the newspaper you’re writing to and to cite it immediately as well; however, you do not have to limit yourself to responding to an article
- Back up your statement with research, evidence, statistics, concrete and/or historical examples – anything compelling, but stick to the facts
- You are 100% responsible for presenting factual content; your piece will go through the editing chain and will be fact-checked, just like anything else we publish. An editor might contact you to elaborate on a point or to make a correction or to research something a bit more. This is standard practice.
- Keep it short
- Keep it timely, focused, relevant
- Feel free to use your own, unique writing voice – it’s OK to use humor, figurative language; be honest and authentic
- Conclusion – could be bolstered by anticipating what opponents might say
