Spirit Week 2024 kicked off Monday with the Slimy Fish Toss and Jello Eating competitions.
Slimy Fish Toss consists of pairs of two tossing a vaseline-coated rubber shark back and forth from increased distances as the rounds progress.
In Division A, seniors Matthew Schlotterbeck ’25 and Jaylen Miller ’25 captured the win, making it the second straight Slimy Fish Toss victory for the duo after last year’s win.
Miller said, “I feel great after the win. It was definitely easier than last year. I thought we were [going to] struggle a little bit this year and be rusty but I think we [had] a pretty convincing victory.”
Schlotterbeck added, “I had so much faith in my partner. It was just too easy and I knew that I was [going to] win with Jaylen this year.”
The juniors captured 2nd place, while the sophomores and freshmen rounded out Division A in third and fourth place, respectively.
In Division B, seniors Isaac Linden ’25 and Chase Barnes ’25 took home the victory in a much more contested affair.
Linden said, “We had to win being the senior class. We [stayed] level-headed, and I just trusted my partner.”
Division B was decided by the third round, as the seniors were tied with the freshman and juniors going into the throw. However, Linden made a clutch catch giving the seniors the win and the Slimy Fish Toss sweep. The freshmen and juniors tied for second, each getting 31.25 points, while the sophomores came in last earning only 12.5 points in Division B.
Following Slimy Fish Toss, the attention turned to the Jello Eating contest. Participants had exactly one minute to eat as much jello as they could from a prepared tin, and then the leftovers in each pan would be weighed. The participant with the lowest weight would win their grade the victory.
Amiya Saint ’26 took home the win in dominating fashion.
The real surprise of the event was Andrew Zhou ’25, filling in for expected jello-eating contestant Noah Frizell ’25.
Zhou stated, “I was a bit nervous, but Preston [Galanis ’25] and the crowd hyped me up so that got my adrenaline going. Eating [the jello] was hard [at times] but I’m definitely satisfied with the results.” Zhou put up a respectable second place finish followed by the freshmean and sophomore’s in third and fourth respectively.
Following Monday’s events, the seniors lead with 175 points, with the juniors closely behind at 168.75 points. The freshmen are in third with 93.75 points, while the sophomores are in last with 62.5 points.
Spirit Week will continue Tuesday, October 22 with the Tug competition, replacing the Quiz Bowl competition rescheduled for Wednesday due to technical difficulties.
