The first fall season for Moorestown Friends in the Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL) has kicked off with a powerful start.
Although all MFS sports are in this same league due to a school-wide transition last spring, each sport plays against different schools based on the division they are placed into for the season. Most of the teams play opponents in the league both home and away, while also playing some out-of-conference contests, depending on the sport.
Isaiah Coleman, the new MFS Athletic Director, discussed his observations so far. “Overall, I feel like all of our teams are competitive in the BCSL compared to our previous participation in the Friends League … the usage of relegation and promotion within divisions in our league is helpful to us,” he remarked.
The girls’ varsity field hockey team looks to be the team to beat in the BCSL Freedom Division with a current undefeated record of 6-0. Having played six out of ten divisional games in the Freedom Division and winning all by a significant margin, especially around the halfway point of the league’s season, shows a strong chance of the Foxes coming home with silverware by the time the season ends.
Field hockey captain Maya DeAndrea ’25 is extremely pleased with the start of the season so far.
“We’ve had more success than any other season I have been a part of with the MFS field hockey program, being undefeated and having only one goal scored against us [in league play] keeps us optimistic going into the second half of the season,” she explained.
The varsity girls’ soccer team has not had an ideal start to their first season in the BCSL. The Foxes are 2-9 overall and 1-6 in the BCSL Patriot Division.
Captain Mikelle Smith ’25 noted, “We lost many players, so it has been a challenge trying to gel with each other and build chemistry, however, we are working hard to improve every day!”
With a unique format in the BCSL having only a single division, the girls’ varsity tennis team is adjusting well to the new league. Having a current 7-2 overall record and 3-0 league record puts them in second place overall in the ten-school, single division league. The tennis team is tied with a 1.000 win percentage with first place Delran, who are 4-0 in the league. The Foxes look to fight for the pole position away at Delran on October 9.
Key contributor Ava Patel ’25, who plays third singles, shared, “The season is going really well. We are all having fun together at practices and bus rides, and when it comes down to matches, our record is positive so far and we grow more and more everyday.”
Boys’ varsity soccer is coming off a strong 2023-24 season this fall, with a 5-1 league record in the BCSL and 7-3 overall record. The Foxes are currently second in the Patriot Division at the halfway mark of the league season. With four games remaining, the winner of the league will come down to some of the final matchups. “I think we are starting to find our rhythm, there will be some bumps in the road, but looking forward and taking every game one at a time is our goal for success,” said senior captain Preston Galanis ’25.
The MFS Cross Country team has started strong in the BCSL this year. A 3-1 overall record with wins against Pennsauken and multiple other teams in a group meet. Unlike other sports, the BCSL ranks the team in a different format through a software called MileSplit to track individual times and team rankings. Currently, the Foxes are ranked five out of 10 in the Freedom Division of the BCSL.
“The season is looking very positive for states, winning nonpublic B is a goal for us along with getting to the Meet of Champ[ions],“ said captain Isaac Linden ’25.
