As the school year comes to a close, MFS athletics is wrapping up its spring season. Since the week of March 11th, 2024 all five sports teams have worked hard and achieved success in their respective seasons.
Baseball:
HEAD COACH: Pat Moran
RECORD: 1-14
Ending the season with one win against STEMCivics giving the team a 1-14 record, the baseball team had a difficult season this year.
Center Fielder Justin Lewis ’26 said, “This year’s season was difficult because most of the team was freshman and sophomores, and for a lot of us it was our first time playing baseball. Our team’s overall lack of experience resulted in a lack of confidence on the field.”
Pitcher and Shortstop Ben Buchdahl ’26, one of the team’s captains, added to this idea, saying, “We lost around a dozen seniors this season, so losing the experience and leadership made it tough.” Although the team did not have a great record, Buchdahl believes that their season was still full of success. “Everyone improved drastically and became better players as the season went on,” said Buchdahl.
Building on that idea, Lewis commented that there were “some fun games and also a strong win.” Lewis said the team is ready to “lock in and come back stronger next year.”
Boys Lacrosse:
HEAD COACH: Tyler Mills
RECORD: 10-7
Boys Lacrosse ended their successful season with a winning 10-7 record. Willie Didie ’26, a player new to lacrosse this season, said, “The team was full of a bunch of new players, who were all willing to learn and become better on the field which made [the] team very successful.” The team closed their season with a strong 8-1 win against New Egypt and enjoyed many other successes over the course of the season.
Each game day, the players would wear a matching outfit to school, whether it be their jerseys or their lacrosse polos, which Didie ’26 said “contributed to the strength of our team on the field.”
Captain and Goalie Leo Dabrow ’24 noted that “the team was a tight-knit group of people who all shared the drive to win,” and further explained that their motivation was evident “through each practice and game that [they] always gave [their] all in.”
Girls Lacrosse:
HEAD COACH: Julie Rothwell
RECORD: 7-7
Girls lacrosse made a strong comeback from last year’s season (1-14 record), with a 7-7 record. The team consisted of just 14 players. This season’s highest scorer, Mikelle Smith ’25, hit career milestones, earning not only her 100th season goal but also her 200th career goal.
Remi Cooke ’24, team captain alongside Ava Blumberg ’24, said, “Our coach always said we are small but mighty, and it is so true. Even with such a small team, we had a great season and I am very proud of us.” The girls lacrosse team will lose six seniors as they walk into their 2025 season; however, according to goalie Amiya Sant ’26, they “hope to continue to remain a powerful and united team.”
Boys Tennis:
HEAD COACH: Kathleen Gonzalez
RECORD: 16-3 • 7-0 in BCSL
Boys Tennis season has had an extremely successful season (14-2), which resulted in them moving into The NJSAA Quarterfinals on May 29th at Princeton Day, making a prominent comeback from their 2022-23 season 9-9 record. The team reached the Quarterfinals (by 3-2) and moved on to the NJSAA Semifinals on May 30th at home. The boys again won by 3-2, advancing to the NJSAA finals where they unfortunately lost with a final score of 1-4.
The team had an impressive and successful season, and Zev Smith ’26 said, “This year has been really great compared to our past seasons because of everyone’s hard work and support for one another. [The team] have all grown close as the season progressed resulting in us improving as a team. Everyone is consistently supportive and dedicated to winning or helping teammates improve which drove our success very far.”
Adding onto this, Co-Captain Gabe Harvey ’25 (alongside Drhu Ponnamaneni ’24) said that he is “very proud of how [they] played all season and could not have asked for a better team to play with. [The team] pushed each other the whole season and it really paid off,” and he “can’t wait to see the team prosper in the years to come.”
Golf:
HEAD COACH: Joe O’Hara
RECORD: 16-3 (11-1 in BCSL)
MFS Golf ended their season with an impressive 16-3 record. A huge success for both the team and individuals this season was winning the Burlington County Scholastic League (BCSL), which Katherine Lee ’25 said “was an incredibly rewarding and memorable moment” for her.
While golf is a mostly individual sport, team success was what drove each individual’s success. The team worked together to create a supportive environment which Lee said “definitely kept me going and motivated this season.”
Vikram Verma ’25 also added that the team was “very close and all shared a desire to win each match,” which kept them bonded. The golf team had a strong season and is ready to build off of that next year.
