Braving inclement weather, on Friday, October 20, the MFS Boys’ Soccer team clinched a 2-1 victory over Friends’ Central in the Friends School League 4 seed vs. 5 seed matchup, with a spot in the FSL playoffs on the line.
The Foxes jumped out to a lead in the second minute thanks to the right foot of Alex Kostopoulos ’26. However, Friends’ Central controlled the game for the majority of the remainder of the first half, preventing the Foxes from keeping possession of the ball.
The second half began with both teams trading scoring opportunities, but the score remained tied thanks to some fantastic saves by both goalies. A defensive miscue tied the game at one with twelve minutes to go. However, the Foxes kept up the pressure — with six minutes left, Preston Galanis ’25 drilled a shot into the top right corner, sending the home crowd into a frenzy and winning the game for the Foxes.
Co-captain of the team Nick Makar ’24 stated, “The atmosphere was just unreal. I can’t really explain it. It was just amazing having all of our friends and everybody that we know out there for the game. And to win it the way we did, with [Galanis]’s goal, it was just unreal. It was unlike any other game that I’ve ever been a part of.”
Matthew Connor ’26 was at the game supporting the team: “The game was really exciting; the parents came out with the drums. Winning was the most important thing, but it was really nice to see everyone support the team.”
Preston Galanis ’25, who scored the game winning goal added, “I was thinking to myself the whole game: if I scored I would run over to the crowd. And it just kind of happened”.
Although the team fell to Westtown in the semifinals on October 25, the win secured the number one seed in the South Jersey Non-Public B bracket. Boys’ Soccer will start their NJSIAA playJoff run in the quarterfinals on Tuesday, October 31 at 2 P.M at home against Wildwood Catholic, the ninth seed.
