The MFS spring sports season kicked off on Tuesday, April 5 with five sports: tennis, boys lacrosse, girls lacrosse, and baseball.
During the first game of the season, varsity boys tennis fell to Shipley School with a score of 3-2. Girls lacrosse also lost to Shipley School with a score of 16-2. Boys lacrosse defeated Winslow with a score of 12-0, along with baseball dominating Abington Friends School with a score of 15-0. Golf secured a victory for against Westtown with a score of 186-196.
Boys tennis captain Dhru Ponnamaneni ’24, who plays first singles, had positive thoughts saying, “We have a very young team that can reach great heights.” Despite the loss, Ponnamaneni commented that “Even though we lost I feel like this is the start of a season where we can all improve and grow as tennis players.” The team is set to face Germantown Friends on April 8 in their second match of the season.
Boys lacrosse defeated Winslow 12-0, led by captain Jack Bitman ’24 who scored five goals and had two assists. Bitman commented on the team’s scrimmage saying “it was a great team win” and “everyone stepped it up and played their best game”. Boys Lacrosse will host Vineland on April 7.
When girls lacrosse fell to Shipley School, Haila Desai ’24 was the leading scorer with two goals. Emma Vernick ’23 commented on the team’s performance: “We were just disconnected as a team. We have a lot of new players this year and it was our first time playing together. We have a lot to work on, but I think we can significantly improve as a team in the next few weeks and definitely win some games.” The girls will travel to Germantown Friends on April 8 to hopefully redeem themselves in the Friends League.
The baseball team shut out Abington Friends School 15-0, with Andrew Mercantini ’23 and Connor Hull ’22 scoring 3 runs each, along with pitcher Jaylen Patel ’23 sealing the deal with four no-hit innings. Patel remarked on the game and the upcoming season saying, “It was a good first game. We did lots of things well, but we also have things to work on.” With the loss of many players this year the team was uneasy but Patel commented that “The ninth graders bring lots of talent that will help us fill some holes since we lost some players. Overall we have lots of potential and I think it will be a successful season after what I saw yesterday.” Baseball’s second Friends League game is on April 8 at George School.
The golf team took home a win with a final score of 185-196 defeating Westown by 11 strokes. Skye Mada ’22 commented on the match: “It was so fun to play in our first match of the season. We each had a few rough holes but pushed through to secure the win.” Mada and Hannah Puc ’24 were the low scorers of the team, both finishing with a 45. The golf team’s next match is away against Delran on April 8.
