MFS Athletics is halfway through its fall sports season. From NJSIAA tournaments to Friends League rivalry matches, the sports teams are off to a strong start.
Boys Soccer: (6-5)
Boys soccer is coming off of a big 7-2 win against Friends Select. They are on a two-game winning streak, beating Pemberton 6-0 on Thursday. Preston Galanis’ (’25) hat trick against Abington Friends helped push him to the second top goal scorer with 7 goals this season. He trails behind Danya Weinstock (’22) with 9 goals. Nathan Jewett (’23) said that although the team is 2-4 against other Friends League teams and “has lost a few tough games,” he is “excited for the remainder of the season.”
Girls Soccer: (4-6)
“One, two, three, WORK! Four, five, six, ALL HEART!” exclaimed Macey Wilkins (’23). “It’s our chant … and especially this season with losing a lot of players, we’ve thrived off the concept of hard work.” Girls soccer defeated George School 5-2 on Wednesday after two consecutive losses against Pennington and Germantown Friends. Foluke Balogun (’24) has scored 19 of the Foxes’ 28 goals this season and goalies Alissa Fox (’23) and Chelsea Mohammad (’24) have a combined 78 saves. The team defeated Abington Friends 6-0 on Thursday, pushing them to a 2-1 record against Friends League teams. Wilkins said the future of the girls soccer team is bright because the “team works hard and tries our best to give everything in our tank.”
Field Hockey: (5-6)
The field hockey team has begun to turn their season around. After five consecutive losses in the beginning of the season, they are currently on a three game winning streak. This includes wins against Friends League teams George School and Friends Select. Tia Obermeier (’23) leads the team with 8 goals, and goalie Ava Carlson (’22) has 105 saves. The next three out of four regular season games will be against other Friends League teams, including Academy of the New Church and Shipley.
Girls Cross Country:
Sarah Mitchell (’23), Hannah Puc (’24), and Maia Morban (’25) are the three members of the girls cross country team. Although 5 official members are required in order for the team to qualify in the Friends League, they have still been practicing daily and competing in races: “Even though we aren’t running to compete, we’re all working on bettering our times and improving on our own goals without having the stress of working against other people,” said Sarah Mitchell.
Boys Cross Country: (6-2)
The boys cross country team is currently 3rd in the Friends League. Andrew Mercantini (’23) finished third overall in a Friends League meet against Shipley, beating them 15-47, and Westtown, falling to them 28-29. They defeated Abington but lost to Germantown during their meet on October 5. Andrew Zhou (’25) commented, “There is a lot of good opposition out there,” with meets against Friends Central, Maple Shade, and Princeton Day coming up. Zhou said he is “feeling pretty good” about the team’s future in the Friends League this season. Emmett Kimberly (’22) said, “The team has a real chance of winning the Friends League” this year. The team is 5-2 in the Friends League, their best record in two decades.
Girls Tennis: (12-0)
The girls tennis team is undefeated in non-tournament matches and are currently on an eight-match winning streak. Although they lost 3-2 against both Moorestown and Cherry Hill East in the Haddonfield Invitational, singles players Bella Pescatore (’21), Kathryn Sebastian (’21), and Skye Mada (’21) won their matches during the Burlington County Open on September 25: “I think it’s been really productive … we have a few more matches coming up, and we’re hoping for the best with those,” said Kathryn Sebastian (’21). The team defeated Ranney 4-1 to earn the title of NJSIAA South Non-Public B Sectional Champions on Tuesday, October 12. The team will travel to Shipley and Westtown in the upcoming weeks.
