On day two of Spirit Week, the Upper School gathered in the Dining Hall Commons during lunch for their favorite trivia game: Quiz Bowl. Students cheered for their grades in the DCH, full of school spirit, however, they were not able to eat during the competition due to Covid protocols.
This year’s categories were Quakerism, formulas, parts of speech, DEIB (diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging), in the first period announcements, and found on the MFS website. To many of the competitors’ surprise, these categories were different from other years: “We sort of decided who would be on our team based on who is good at what. We anticipated that there would be a sport or a Phillies category, but there just wasn’t,” explained Shriya Reddy, one of the competitors on the junior team.
The seniors kicked off the competition by answering four questions correctly in a row, putting them in the lead with 1400 points. Soon after, the sophomores and juniors jumped into the game, quickly catching up to the seniors.
As the scores between the sophomores, juniors, and seniors were getting closer, the competition between the three teams was getting stronger. Teams would get called out by other participants or students in the crowd for forgetting to say “what is …” or for changing their answers after already giving an answer.
Pushing for the seniors to win, Ava Parker ’22 reacted to the juniors making a mistake by exclaiming, “You can’t answer 40 times, juniors!”
Right before Final Jeopardy, the seniors were far ahead of the other teams, with a total of 2500 points. Following the seniors, the juniors had 1500 points and the sophomores had 1100 points. The class of ’25 was in last place with negative 500 points, meaning they did not qualify for final jeopardy.
The sophomore, junior, and senior teams had to choose how many points they wanted to wager before the final jeopardy question was given. The seniors decided on 500 points, the juniors decided on 100 points, and the sophomores decided on 1100 points.
The final jeopardy question was: “When we defeat our sports opponent and our opponent is our rival, what is the phrase we use when we are victorious?” The correct answer was: Sink the Ship.
All three teams answered the question correctly, making the seniors the winners, the sophomores in second, the juniors in third, and the ninth graders in last.
The class of ’22 was excited about their win for the second year in a row: “Yeah, I loved Quiz Bowl. We always win!” Janiah McRae, celebrated.
