The Girls Field Hockey team beat Collingswood 2-1 in their first scrimmage of the season on Thursday, September 24. Although it was only the first scrimmage, Jordan Obermeier ’21 said that “it was a really good game. We played a lot better than I thought. The exciting part was that we haven’t beat Collingwood before and this was our first time at least in my four years here at MFS.”
The Boys Soccer team won their first scrimmage against Florence on Thursday September 24. This was the team’s first and only scrimmage of the year, in which they won 3-1. Evan Kolaris ’22 scored two goals and Carrington Mizelle ’21. Since this was their first scrimmage, Danya Weinstock ’22 explained, “it was a little harder because most people were out of shape.” Highlighting interesting parts of the scrimmage, Weinstock added, “Evan [Schlotterbeck] and I both would’ve gotten yellow cards if it was a real game.” Weinstock and Schlotterbeck both kicked the ball away after the play, which would result in a yellow card if it was a real game.
Girls Soccer also won their first scrimmage at Highland on Thursday, September 24. Because of the shortened preseason, like Boys Soccer and Field Hockey, this was their first and last scrimmage of the year. Their varsity team played a close game and won 3-2. Roni Kennedy ’22 commented, “We worked well together for our first game. It was fun to play with a team again.”
The Girls Tennis team won their first match against Burlington Township 6-0 on Wednesday, September 30. Each player and doubles team won their sets 6-0 or 6-1. The match was originally scheduled for Tuesday, September 29, but it was rescheduled after being rained out.
First doubles player, Roma Jha ’22 said, “we’re used to having scrimmages and used to getting into the rhythm of matches before we have one that actually counts. But this time we all just had to be on our best game the first time we played another team which was definitely weird.”
Because of new Covid-19 match protocols, the athletes were only allowed to touch their own tennis balls. Jha commented, “ it felt weird to have to carry your own tennis balls back and forth since we weren’t allowed to touch the other team’s balls.”
