The MFS Girls Field Hockey team has been crowned Friends School League Champions. The Foxes defeated Westtown 3-1 on Tuesday to earn their first FSL title in 12 years.
After Westtown struck first with an early goal to give them a 1-0 lead, the Foxes retaliated with a goal of their own late in the first quarter. Jordan Obermeier’s (’21) goal evened the score at 1 apiece with 12 minutes left in the first half. Obermeier scored once more before the end of the first half, giving the Foxes a 2-1 lead as they entered halftime.
The girls began the second half with a sense of urgency, as they worked to create a two goal differential. Jackie Barr’s (’20) goal in the second half allowed the Foxes some breathing room, giving them a 3-1 lead. The Foxes’ articulate stick work, smooth passes, and abundant communication allowed the team to take control of the play in the second half, shutting out Westtown and eventually, securing the victory.
The team’s Friends League Championship win caps off a season of spectacular interleague play. The girls entered the Friends School League playoffs as the undefeated #1 seed. The players cite the tight knit nature of their team as one of the biggest factors of their continued success.
Barr, who scored the go-ahead goal in today’s game said that their victories “come down to communication,” which is a product of how close she said her team is “on and off the field.”
Midfielder Hannah Wilson (’21) added, “the reason why we have so much success is because we are so bonded as a team.” Wilson continued,”We always have each other’s backs, on and off the field, and we really mean it when we say that.”
It is this special bond that this team shares that Head Coach Danielle Dayton said makes this squad so memorable.
“What stands out to me in this team,” she said, “is exactly the word ‘team’. This team has come together. Each and every person has a gift that they bring to this team, and they each put their gifts into our big bucket of Moorestown Friends Field Hockey, and that is what makes us unstoppable.”
