On September 24, 2019, four MFS athletic teams hosted Friends League matchups.
The number one ranked Girls Tennis team continued its undefeated season with a 5-0 victory over Friends Central. Renna Mohsen-Breen (’20), Bella Pescatore (’22), and Lisa Seiler (’21) all won their singles matches in straight sets. First doubles duo Elena Styliades (‘20) and Skye Mada (’22) breezed through their match, winning 6-0, 6-0. After a hard-fought doubles match, Natalie Julian (‘21) and Rhoma Jha (’22) completed MFS’ sweep of Friends Central with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 victory. The team takes on cross-town rival, Moorestown High School, on October 1 at 4:00 at Moorestown High School.
Moving from the court to the field, the Girls Field Hockey team took care of business in their first Friends League match-up of the year, winning 3-1 against Westtown. Jackie Barr (’20) led the team with two goals and an assist. Priya Shah (’21) also contributed a goal to bring the Foxes’ total for the day to three points. Shah and Hannah Wilson each had an assist. Ava Carlson (’22) was a strong force in the net. She performed five saves, bringing her season total to 61 saves.
The Girls Field Hockey team then faced Pemberton on September 25 at 4:00 home and had a dominant 7-2 win. Jackie Barr (’20) and Lauren Phillips (’21) led the Foxes with two goals apiece. Jordan Obermeier (’21), Priya Shah (’21), and Bella McCollister (’21) each netted a goal. Obermeier also recorded two assists. The Foxes will see if they can keep their winning streak alive when they travel to Maple Shade on September 27, 2019 for their 3:45 match.
In their first Friends League match of the season, the Girls Soccer team was edged out by Friends Central, 1-0. In their valiant effort, goalie Lizzie Carter (’20) recorded 15 saves. The girls play at Abington Friends School today. Kickoff is at 4:00. September 27
While there was much excitement on the fields and courts, there was plenty of action happening around them, too. The Boys and Girls Cross Country teams each hosted a Friends League match up. In their second Friends League meet of the season, the Boys Cross Country team split a tri-meet with Friends Select (W 19-36) and Westtown (L 15-48). The Foxes’ top finisher was Aidan Chick (’20), with a time of 18:12. The Girls Cross Country team lost a heart-fought race against Westtown, 19-36. Kat Johnson (’21) was the girls’ top finisher, ending with a time of 26:24. On October 2, 2019, both teams travel to compete in a 4:00 tri-meet at Germantown against both Germantown Friends School and George School.
Although not at home, the Boys Soccer Team brought their Fox pride to Germantown, where they were victorious over the reigning Friends School League Champions. The Foxes beat Germantown Friends 2-1, with goals coming from Astin Galanis (’21), and Matt D’Ottavi (’21). Danya Weinstock (’22) provided the assist on the game winning goal. Goalie Mikey Paznokas (’21) came in clutch, recording a penalty kick save with 20 minutes left in the match and the score tied at 1-1. Paznokas ended the day with 6 saves. On September 27, 2019, the Foxes will test their dominance in the Friends League in their home match against Friends Select at 4:00.
