Alex Gervasi has one of the most coveted jobs available in the communications industry, working alongside Ryan Seacrest in Los Angeles, California. On a daily basis, the young entrepreneur schedules music lineups, seeks out artists, and makes executive decisions among the biggest names in the world. She is a star by no small measure and is the cousin of MFS’s own Evelyn Reynolds ‘20. WordsWorth got the special opportunity to interview Gervasi for the first segment in its new “featured artist, entertainer, and entrepreneur” series. She gave us an inside look into her current job at 102.7 KIISFM- LA’s Number 1 Hit Music Station! and her personal journey as a young entrepreneur.
Gervasi’s motivation to become what she is today began with an early dream to join the communications industry. As a child, she gained inspiration from her aunt (Reynolds’s mother) who worked at Q102. She told Wordsworth, visiting the station planted the seed of her dream to join the industry. Eventually deciding to work for that dream in college, Gervasi chose Asbury University’s Media Comm major to help her achieve her goals. She was soon hired at the local iHeartMedia station as a mere sophomore, driven to begin her career as soon as possible.
Gervasi told Wordsworth that a great work ethic, desire to make personal connections, and a hunger for learning were what propelled her to the top of the industry. John Ivey, her current boss at iHeart, discovered her quickly through her local jobs and a few smaller gigs. After spending over a year flying around the country with iHeart, she landed in L.A. Early 2am shifts turned into 10pm shifts which turned into her past February promotion to the 10am-3pm slot. Gervasi now has the ability to sit alongside Seacrest and meet the biggest international stars.
“Kendrick Lamar will always be one of my favorites” she admitted to Wordsworth. “[He’s] so down to earth.” Other big stars in Gervasi’s past interview mix are Big Sean and Ed Sheeran. “[With] Cardi B I was trying so hard not to fangirl! She was so nice!” she shared excitedly. Gervasi was also one of Shawn Mendes’s first interviews and divulged that Brendon Urie, Ariana Grande, and Mendes all made “lasting positive impressions” on her.
For anyone who’s wondered about keeping it cool around a big name celebrity, Gervasi told Wordsworth that “You don’t have to! I don’t want them to lose respect for me, but there is a way to say you admire them without freaking out. I’ve told people that I am such a fan of them or thanked them for their music in a non-creepy way.” Bantering with Seacrest and greeting A-listers is her regularly scheduled activity, and it is all due to hard work from her humble beginnings.
