This past Saturday the MFS girls’ Junior Varsity Lacrosse team captured its first Friends League JV tournament title since 2008. The Foxes went unbeaten in games to Germantown Friends, Shipley and George School which led the team to a replay vs. GFS in the final. In the rematch the Foxes were able to come back from an early 3-0 deficit to defeat GFS 7-6 and lift the championship trophy.  The JV girls’ lacrosse tournament is usually dominated by Germantown Friends which makes the victory an even greater achievement.

“Everyone worked very hard Saturday,” said junior goalie Breanna Riddick, who played two games in goal. “It really was a team effort and we deserved it.” Riddick played against Shipley and George School, while sophomore Lauren Buck played goalie against Germantown Friends in both the group stage and the championship game.

Freshman Megan Mininno (1 goal), Sam Ghazal (5) and Caroline Cook (1) all scored in the championship game. Mininno hailed her teammates for playing “perfect lacrosse. We made connections, played smartly and we had each other’s backs.  Everyone gave everything they had, we worked together and we never gave up.”

Coach Allison Kural agreed with her players, commenting that the team “played with heart and hustle in every game.”

Including the tournament, the Foxes currently have five wins, one tie and one loss and hope to take its FSL JV tournament victory as momentum for the rest of the season.

“[The tournament] puts things in a very positive light going forward,” said Kural. “This [sort of success] hasn’t happened since 2008, especially against Germantown. Now we are definitely a team that can be in the mix at the JV and Varsity level. This tournament victory will help us going forward for the rest of the season knowing that we have the capability to keep playing and working hard.”
