MFS Junior Erin Chen earned 9th place in the Saber Individual New Jersey State Championships at Montgomery High School on Saturday, February 28th.
Chen qualified for the tournament when she secured 3rd place in Districts for her individual performance. In addition to her individual victory, she also helped the MFS girls Saber Fencing Squad finish 2nd in that same competition. The squad went on to place 6th out of a total of 20 schools in the Saber State competition. Chen attributed the team’s success to “hard work and determination.”
The Junior fencer has participated in fencing since she was 14 years old and has competed with the varsity fencing squad at MFS since her freshman year. With the ninth place finish, Chen ends her season with a stunning 24-2 record under her belt. She is very appreciative of her team’s support this season. “I am very proud of our squad’s performance this year, both girls team and saber squad. Even though fencing is an individual sport, I could not have achieved anything this year without them. It was a total team effort and a great season for everybody.”
Chen is without a doubt a leader in the MFS fencing team. Although her achievement is impressive, Erin hopes to accomplish even more next year. “Although I did not do as well as I hoped in States today, I’m looking forward to next year and will work hard in order to perform better.”
